The Jellico volleyball season featured its share of ups and downs, but Saturday’s battle with Oakdale represented the team’s grit and growth. “I thought it was some of the best playing we had all year,” Surber said after the game. “They did so well. The past two times we went up against Oakdale, the scores had been so close. The first time we played them, three of the five sets were won by 2 points. The second time we played them, two of the four sets were won by 2 points. Then, it happened again in the first set of the district tournament.”
Indeed, Jellico pushed Oakdale to the brink in each meeting this season, a reflection of the steady progress the team has made since the start of the year. “It was honestly a great game to watch,” Surber added. “They put their all into it, and that is what makes my girls winners to me. They never give up.”
The tournament, held Saturday at Coalfield High School, marked the culmination of a challenging but rewarding season for the Jellico volleyball program.
Competing in a Bigger District Brings New Challenges

“Being moved to a new larger district was a challenge, to say the least,” Surber explained. “But I don’t believe our girls performed poorly. We had a lot of things come against us this season, injuries, illness, and schedule changes, and that can impact your performance as a team.”
Even so, the Blue Devils proved they could hang with the best. Many of their matches came down to just a few key plays. “Even though every match didn’t end in our favor,” Surber said, “I feel that we can truly compete with the teams in our district. There were so many close games this season. I believe these girls gave it their all and the best they could do.”
Learning, Growth, and the Road Ahead
More than the final record, this Jellico volleyball season was about growth, learning to play under pressure, developing chemistry, and finding confidence. The Blue Devils improved in multiple areas, including serve consistency and defensive positioning, while several younger players gained valuable experience on the court.
Coach Surber emphasized that the strides made this season will pay dividends in 2026. “There was a lot of growth as well, which is important going into next season,” she said. “We’re building a foundation for something special here.
